Warm and Toasty Heated Insoles Heated sole: a pair of Dr. Scholl's insoles, 2 12' pieces of 0.025" monel safety wire. Monel wire is a nickel/copper alloy and is a high resistance wire. 12' is approx 5 ohms. the total resistance of the series wired pair is approx 9.5 ohms, I did have to cut a couple of inches of wire off when I finished the sewing. Each piece stiched to an insole as illustrated. Each end of the wire is soldered to a piece of 16g lampcord and the solder joint is covered with a bit of 1/8" heatshrink tubing and taped down with a piece of clear "hockey" tape. the two soles are wired in series so the current draw is approx 1.5 amp. this gives about 10 watts of heat per boot. Seems just about right, Tested for 1.5 hrs at 16 to 18 F on a V65 Magna, just purrfect. You put them in wire side down with heavy socks.
